Rebecca Peterson Downs Gauff to Advance to Dow Tennis Classic Quarterfinals

MIDLAND, Michigan, January 31, 2019 – After a tight first couple of games, Rebecca Peterson was able to seize control of the match and put in a strong performance as she cruised into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Coco Gauff.

For the second day in a row the tournament’s top seed, Peterson, has made easy work of her opponent as she’s claimed back-to-back straight set victories in her 2019 DTC Campaign.

“I think that honestly every game was pretty tough – a lot tougher than the score said,” commented Peterson of the match with Gauff, “I’m happy with the way I played today and I’m happy to be through.”

The pair split early games, but after the fourth game in the opening set Peterson began to take over. Peterson proceeded to break Gauff on four of her next five service games to close out the opening set 6-2, and breeze through the second set 6-1.

Getting better as the match went on seemed to be a metaphor for Peterson’s plans for the week as she is hoping to improve a bit match-by-match as she proceeds deeper into the draw.

“Obviously I am here to do as well as I can,” added Peterson, “If I wasn’t here with the goal to win the tournament then I’m not supposed to be here. But, as I said, I feel like I’m improving every day so I’m happy with the process.”

In the quarterfinals she awaits Kristie Ahn. Peterson and Ahn faced off a week ago in Newport Beach and while Peterson did get the better of Ahn that day, she isn’t taking the American lightly.

“She is a very strong opponent,” said Peterson, “She is playing very well here indoors so I think it will be a challenge.”
